Which one is it?
Paper wasp
Long and slender, brown to reddish with yellow markings, legs dangling in flight. Builds an open, umbrella-shaped paper nest with the cells showing.
Why they're on or near your house
Paper wasps nest where they are out of the rain and sun: under eaves and soffits, in porch and lanai ceilings, behind shutters, on light fixtures, in mailboxes and under railings and playsets.
A queen starts a new nest in spring and the colony grows through the summer, so a small nest by the front door in April can be a much bigger one by late summer. They hunt caterpillars and drink nectar, so gardens and shrubs close to the house keep them nearby.
What we do about it
