Drywood Termites(Family: Kalotermitdae)

Description: Drywood Termites are larger than the Subterranean Termites.  The soldiers and winged forms are actually up to 1/2 inch in length.  Drywood termites are named for the ability to survive without moisture, unlike the Subterraneans.

Developmental Biology: A male and female pair choose an area to infest. The entrance hole is plugged and behind there, a gallery is excavated and the queen lays the first eggs.  The nymphs hatch and go through a metamorphosis that is more complex than other termites. Soldiers and reproductives emerge within the colony and have no specific castes like Subterranean termites.

General Behavior: Generally, Drywood termites enter wood through a crack and joint where two pieces of wood join.  From there, they begin to excavate chambers that are connected by small tunnels. The chambers are kept clean and excreta are stored in unused chambers. It also is discarded out tiny holes on the wood surface.  These excreta pellets are distinguishing features of a non-subteranean termite. Drywood termites attack furniture, structures, and raw lumber.

Method of Infestation: Drywood termites can live without moisture or contact with the ground. These termites are known to be imported to different locations via lumber or wooden furniture. Other methods may be situation specific.

Management: Two distinct methods are used to treat Drywood termites. The first is structural fumigation. The entire building is covered with a gas tight cover and the gas is emitted. The second treatment type is direct wood treatment. Holes are drilled into the galleries and an insecticide in the form of dust or liquid carried by foam. This type treatment is used when the infestation is limited. A preventative treatment can be applied as a home is constructed by mean of treatment to all raw lumber within the house.
